You make several good points. The only one I'd take further is the overwhelming tendency for people to overlook the power of provocation. Very few people start with violence; there is almost always something that leads to it.
Of course, often, the receiver of the violence only provides the spark. The cannon may have already been loaded. But more often, the 'victim' isn't innocent.
It's when the provoker refuses to accept responsibility for their part in the conflict that I see the problem. It's not Rock's fault that Smith hit him. But it was his responsibility to avoid the situation in the first place.
People - comedians especially - believe that they can go through life doing and saying whatever they want, depending on the self-control of others. No one can be surprised that one finally got told.
Violence is always an option. But when one incites conflict, one must be prepared to accept the consequences.
